Assemblymember Connolly Highlights State Action on ICE
Legislators announce new bills to protect communities & hold the Trump Administration accountable
SACRAMENTO, CA – In the wake the murder of Alex Pretti in Minnesota, a nurse who was fatally shot by federal immigration agents, Assemblymember Connolly (D-San Rafael) and state lawmakers held a press conference to stand in solidarity against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) violence, demand Congress reject funding to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and announce state efforts to protect Californians and hold the Trump Administration accountable.
“Communities throughout the North Coast have been shaken by the terror campaign waged by ICE and the Federal government,” said Assemblymember Connolly. “California cannot, and will not, stand idly by, we are taking action. Residents deserve to know how their representatives are stepping up during this crisis, which is why I want to provide an overview of the work we are doing in the State Legislature to fight back.”
This year, Assemblymember Connolly is coauthoring legislation to hold ICE and the Federal government accountable. This includes:
SB 747, The No Kings Act (Wiener): holds federal officers like ICE responsible for violating the Constitution by creating a right of action under California state law for violations of constitutional rights, giving Californians a robust new path to gain relief and hold government actors accountable for lawless behavior.
AB 1537 (Bryan): prohibits local law enforcement officers from working or volunteering with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE.
As of this week, newly announced legislation to strengthen California’s response includes AB 1627 (Avila Farias), which will prohibit former ICE employees from becoming law enforcement officers in California. Other upcoming proposals have also been announced, but not yet introduced as bills. These include:
- Requiring the California Attorney General to investigate all incidents involving a shooting by federal immigration enforcement agents.
- Prohibiting ICE from using state properties as staging areas for federal operations.
Last year, Assemblymember Connolly supported several bills that created the nation’s strongest protections against ICE, including:
- SB 627 “The No Secret Police Act” (Wiener, coauthored by Asm. Connolly): prohibits local and federal law enforcement from concealing their face masks.
- AB 49 (Muratsuchi): protects classrooms and daycares by prohibiting school officials and employees from allowing ICE to conduct immigration enforcement without a warrant.
- SB 81 (Arreguin): prohibits hospitals and healthcare providers from granting ICE access to patients without a warrant.
- AB 419 (Connolly): authored by Assemblymember Connolly, this bill requires schools to post the Immigration-Enforcement Actions at California Schools Guide for Students and Families from the Attorney General, also known as “Know Your Educational Rights,” in both English and Spanish.
As a member of the Assembly Budget Committee, Assemblymember Connolly also helped secure $25 million in dedicated funding for immigration attorneys and assistance for immigrants to aid those fighting to obtain or keep legal status, and to prevent wrongful detention and deportation.
In the coming weeks, additional legislation is expected to be introduced to further protections against ICE and fight back against the lawlessness of the Federal government.
